He began to feel puzzled that his meek and careful rose, the only one on his planet, was only one of five thousand.

He felt deeply helpless, miserable and overwhelmed until he met the fox. It was this mature, intellectual fox who had taught him taming and ritual, and taught him slowly the sublime meaning of love and duty.
